Statewide Observance Committee, Inc.
A 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Service Organization
Welcome to the Website of the
FLORIDA DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
STATEWIDE OBSERVANCE COMMITTEE, INC.
Established in 2013 to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Committee was created to carry on the legacy of Dr. Marvin Davies, former Special Assistant to Florida Governor Robert “Bob” Graham. In the 1980s, Davies spearheaded the annual state King celebrations directed by the Governor’s Office. These historic events took place in St. Augustine, Eatonville and Tallahassee and in other parts of Florida.
In 2003 after his death, the Florida Legislature renamed the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 the Dr. Marvin Davies Florida Civil Rights Act in his honor. At the end of Graham’s tenure as governor, Florida no longer coordinated a state level celebration thereby leaving local organizations to conduct events on the 3rd Monday of January on their own.
On June 3, 2018, Dr. Davies was inducted into the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame further celebrating his legacy and inspiration to carry on the fight for justice and economic growth.
